animal rights_stute Essays (557 words) - Bioethics, Animal Rights
Richard Heredia Ms. Stute ERWC-4 23 September 2013 Animal Rights In the article "A Change of Heart about Animals," by Jeremy Rifkin , he starts by stating how researchers are finding that many animals are very similar to humans. Rifkin states , "What these researches are finding is that many of our fellow creatures are more l i ke us than we imagined. They fee l pain, suffer and experience stress, affection, excitement and even love- and these findings are changing how we view animals." I agree. Rifkin is not trying to make animals have a human rights he i s just stating that we should treat them fairly and humane. As a dog owner, I believe that it is important to treat animals the way we want to be treated. Animals are not just for accessories, we must learn to share this earth with them. He gives several examples in his article arguing on how animals have human characteristics. For example, he mentions an experiment that was done on two birds named Abel and Betty. This experiment consisted of putting meat in a tube and observing if Betty and Abel were smart enough to figure out a way to take out the meat of the tube. They were given two wires one hooked and one straight, both of them chose the hooked wire. But then , " Abel, the more dominant male, stole Betty's hook leaving her with only the straight wire. Betty then used her beak to wedge the straight wire in a crack and then she bent it to produce a hook. " This proves that animals go through a thinking process just like we do. In another stud y, Koko, a 300-pound gorilla at the Gorilla Foundation in California has been taught American Sign Language. She has acquired a 1,000 word vocabulary and, "On human IQ test, she scores between 70 and 95." To learn a sophisticated language is remarkable for any anima l, let alone sign language. It has been thought to be impossible for any animal to communicate to humans through a legit language, this shows that animals have the right to be treated fairly and humanely. When it comes down to core of what being human is, grief is what separates humans from animals. Mourning our dead is the important because it shows our emotional attachment to that individual. Observations show that, "Elephants will often stand next to their dead kin for days, occasionally touching their bodies with their trunks." This period of standing shows that animals make deep connections with one another. They bond with each other, a characteristic that had long been thought that only humans could have. Animals deserve to be treated better, after all we do share this world with them. Why should humans be the only a nimals in this world that are treated somewhat decent ? I strongly agree with Rifkin w hen he states that we have to t reat our animals more humane and we should stop mistreating them in painful laboratory experiments. We should treat animals the way we want to be treated. Work Cited Rifkin, Jeremy. "A Change of Heart about Animals." Editorial. Los Angeles times [Los Angeles] 1 Sept. 2003: n. pag . Print

roswell incident essays
roswell incident essays The Roswell UFO cover-up occurred in July 1947, when the United States Air Force supposedly recovered the remains of an alien spacer craft or UFO, near Roswell New Mexico. This event was not even considered a UFO cover-up until the late seventies to early sixties when the big alien phase broke out. Before this time, Roswell was considered a high altitude weather balloon that had popped. During the UFO craze, many books were writing about the issue and new theories emerged, such as not only was the government hiding the fact that there really was an alien crash site and that they had recovered parts of the ship, but also that alien bodies had been recovered. When the records tried to be located none were found about UFOs, but was found was a top-secret balloon project that was designed to monitor the Soviets testing nuclear weapons. This project was called Project Mogul. Many books have been written on the Roswell mishaps that disagree with each other, but the Roswell Incident a report of Air Force Research team and The Roswell UFO Crash: What They dont Want You to Know by Kal K. Korff tend to agree that there was no cover-up, but just a huge misunderstanding that was brought about by the media in a craze for a hot story. The Roswell incident shares some of the same views that Korff holds. Korff believes that it whole thing is nonsense and every one who believes that is was an UFO crash is not stupid, but misguided. By listing peoples testimonies about how they saw the UFO crash or how the metal was indestructible and then proving every point that is wrong about their testimony and how they are not credible witnesses, he not only embarrass them and their families he destroys their reputation. For example, Korff lists the testimony by one Jim Ragsdale about how he saw the ship crash and bodies scattered about the wreckage; then a few months later turns around and says over the next few mont...

The Efficient Pollution Control Regulatory System Essay
The Efficient Pollution Control Regulatory System - Essay Example increase in price of bread as delineated in the diagram above by an increase in price of bread from P0 to P1 , this result to a new equilibrium in the market E1. (ii) Complementary goods are that usually consumed together (jointly consumed goods). In the case of Complementary goods when the demand r the price of the other good is decreased. Bread and butter are complementary goods, therefore they exhibit a cross elasticity of demand so when the price for margarine and butter is increased it result to a decrease in demand of bread causing a inward shift of the demand curve thus the quantity of bread demanded falls. PRICE D1 D0 S P2 P1 D0 D1 0 Q1 Q0 QUANTITY BREAD From the above diagram an increase in price of butter and margarine will cause shift the demand curve of bread from D0 D0 to D1 D1. This results in a decline in the amount of bread demand illustrated by a shift by the demand curve. ii) In the case of increase in the price of potatoes, rice and pasta, these could are not relat ed in any way. Therefore, they would not result in influencing an increase in the quantity of bread demand or supplied since these goods are not related in way. This can be illustrated by the diagram below. Price D0 S0 P0 S0 D0 Q0 Quantity From the above diagram, an increase in price of rice, potatoes and pasta does not in way affect the quantity of bread demand or supplied. Q2. A) A graph illustrating shortages causes by price controls. price DB DA S $4 $3 DB S DA 0 QS Q* QA QB Quantity In the above diagram when the price of a kilo of banana is $4 the quantity demanded is Q, that is where the demand is equal to the quantity supplied. When the price is fixed at $3 per kilo of banana the quantity supplied is Qs, while the quantity demanded is QA and QB for both cities A and B respectively.... When individuals fall they have to seek medical attention thus incurring huge medical bills. Therefore, pollution of storm water negative contributes to the society. The company polluting the stormwater on the other hand enjoys returns emanating from their production activities without considering the cost that they pass on to the society when pollute the environment t(Haley, 121) In addition to this pollution of storm water, depletes the amount of water available for human consumption therefore individuals have to search for other alternative sources of water which are not expensive but water becomes scarce. This represents an additional cost to the society occasioned by the production activities of the firm (Haley, 131) Therefore in order to minimize the amount of pollution of our environment the government needs to intervene so as to reduce amount emission that the firm releases to river as well as other air. The best method to caution the society from the externalities is by charging the polluting firms a standard fee that would go towards financing the affected individuals in circumstances like subsidizing their medical or treatment of the polluted water. Introduction of laws that would require firms which pollute the environment to pay. This would be essential, since firms are supposed to be in the frontline of preserving the environment, therefore, they have to pay when pollute the environment. Apart from this, the polluting company should compensate the society for the cost incurred from their production activities.
